Poppi is a space explorer who travels the galaxy on their own, collecting different species of flora. They are relatively quiet and calm, but can easily get frazzled when things don't go their way. Poppi's kneepads and boots are scuffed from searching through extraterrestrial biomes, overall they're a bit banged-up. . . Parts of Poppi's gear glow, which helps in the depths of space. Though Poppi has a love for adventure, they are no match for homesickness -- that's why Poppi wears their mom's scarf to keep cozy.
This character was modeled to look like a plastic toy, reminiscent of legos.
This project was a large endeavor and was the first character, alongside Mr. Mint, to be taken entirely through the 3D modeling pipeline, from conception to rigging. Starting with silhouette experimentation, Poppi was continuously refined until I was able to develop a character model sheet on which I based my 3D model.
Some challenges of this project included determining whether to build part of Poppi as a few large, detailed objects or as a combination of many individual objects. I settled on the latter. The biggest lesson I learned while developing this character was to explode the mesh before baking details into the texture -- neglecting to do so negatively impacted the animation of the character. Lastly, rigging this character was a very challenging task. I used AdvancedSkeleton to develop the rig, but weight-painting this character was a pain. Overall, this was a really great learning experience.
A Peek At The Process
All parts of this model were created as separate shapes in ZBrush.
Modeling Phase
Some character assets were retopologized for animation in ZBrush, while others were done in Maya.
